Outsourcing

In 2012 rum46 investigated the notion “Outsourcing”. As part of this investigation, they collaborated with PASAJist in Istanbul. For 14 days they literally outsourced their artistic practice by moving their kitchen, project and exhibition space to several places of Istanbul. The physical project space of rum46 is reconstructed with their actual dimensions, by using cardboards and outsourced from its Danish street-address, number 46, to Gezi Park, Mimar Sinan University and PASAJist. For two weeks, this staged physical plateau of rum46 hosted workshops, talks and suppers. The topic revolved around the notion of cultural valuation, as rum46 examined what cultural value they, as a non-profit exhibition space, can gain from the outsourcing process.

The first day, artists met the audience at PASAJist to present their concept of “outsourcing”. rum46 introduced themselves, their previous works and their ongoing research field. They announced the future days’ program and fixed meeting dates and places with the participants.

The Exchange: Rum 46 asked people to bring an object or a term that represents a cultural value for them. These were objects for an investigation of cultural growth in close dialogue with people. The investigation took place in a crossover between the local culture of the people they meet and the local culture they bring along. In order to strengthen the discussion on what cultural outsourcing is, they added elements and modify the objects and terms they received and gave them back to their owners.

The dinner: rum46 asked people to write down a recipe or bring an ingredient specific to their culture. All together they cooked a diner in the park, on the cardboard, representing their actual kitchen and ate together.
